In the side yard of a historic 1835 house in Essex, NY sits an octagon-shaped schoolhouse, originally built in the 1850s to educate the children of the household. For years the schoolhouse had fallen into disrepair. Our clients restored their house, their barn, and then the structure of the schoolhouse.
Our charge was to provide a setting for the schoolhouse that would be comfortable for a gathering of people, provide a feeling of separation from the main road while not hiding the structure, take advantage of the spectacular view of Lake Champlain, and do so in an environmental and artful way.
